WASHINGTON, D.C. – December 19, 2024 – Tiempo Latino, the Spanish-language publication of Tiempo Company based in Washington D.C., has been selected as one of more than 400 newsrooms to participate as a 2025 Report for America host newsroom partner. Through this participation, the publication will offer an aspiring journalist a valuable opportunity to begin a career in local news while bringing new and diverse perspectives to the field.
According to Report for America, local journalism in the U.S. has experienced a significant decline since 2005, with 37% of newspapers shutting down and two-thirds of newspaper journalists leaving the industry. This downturn has had serious consequences for communities, including reduced voter participation, increased polarization, lower bond ratings, and higher levels of corruption. In response, Report for America introduced an accelerator program to help newsrooms create sustainable business models, bolstering their financial stability and ensuring their long-term viability.
“With reliable, representative news and trust steadily disappearing at the local level, Report for America and our next generation of news leaders and community news organizations are now even better positioned to lead this industry through challenge and change,” said Rob Zeaske, president and CEO of The GroundTruth Project, home of Report for America and Report for the World.
For more than 30 years, the team at Tiempo Latino has been dedicated to providing accessible, multimedia, and multi-platform journalism. By blending talent, experience, and a keen understanding of evolving trends, the publication benefits from the diverse perspectives of multiple generations within its organization. This diversity enhances its ability to adapt to changing audience needs. Whether through traditional reporting, audiovisual content, or social media, Tiempo Latino ensures its journalism remains relevant and accessible, catering to both dedicated readers and tech-savvy audiences alike.
“Through its collaboration with Report for America, Tiempo Latino will gain access to a new talent who will benefit from a proven model of training, mentoring, and support to help advance a career,” mentioned Rafael Ulloa, Deputy Publisher at Tiempo Latino. “This partnership strengthens our mission to build trust with local communities, amplifying underrepresented voices and highlighting the impact of our work,” he added.
Journalists can apply for open positions here with host newsrooms, including Tiempo Latino, by February 3, 2025, for roles starting on July 7, 2025.
